Dr. Alexaundrea Smith is a rare mix: a top bikini fitness competitor headed to WBFF and a practicing dentist whose winning smile says it all. We flew up from Boca Raton to Orlando in Summer 2023 to document her fitness journey with a fit-and-beautiful fashion-meets-fitness session, part portfolio, part competition prep, all high-end content for socials and sponsors.

This was a model portfolio photoshoot with the purpose: to translate gym grit into editorial polish. As a South Florida photographer team, we built images that read strong onstage and scroll-stopping on feeds, exactly what pageant competitors, fitness athletes, and influencers need.

Concept: Fitness, Fashion, and a Smile That Wins

The brief was simple: show the athlete and the professional. Half the set felt like magazine editorial, clean lines, bold lighting, editorial fashion photography, and half felt like intimate lifestyle portraits that speak to her personal brand as a dentist and competitor.

We blended fashion photographer sensibilities with fitness photographer techniques: editorial silhouettes, tight detail shots of muscle definition, and lifestyle portraits that let her personality shine. The vibe was "fit and beautiful", powerful poses, soft smiles, and a final gallery that sells both performance and personality.

Location: Orlando, Florida- Heat, Palms, and Studio Precision

Orlando's summer air is humid and heavy, which actually helps skin look hydrated on camera, but we kept sessions short, crisp, and focused to avoid fatigue. We shot a mix of studio setups and outdoor frames under palm-lined spaces with clean architectural backdrops. Traveling from Boca Raton to Orlando meant we arrived with a full kit ready for anything the native light threw at us.

Suppose you want more ideas for outdoor fashion photography in South Florida or a Boca Raton photoshoot. In that case, we know where the light hits best across the region, from Miami Beach to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.

Gear & Lighting: Sony A1 + Lenses, Strobes, and Punchy Editorial Light

We worked on the Sony A1, primarily with a 24–70 and a 70–200 GM, switching quickly between wider editorial frames and tight, stage-ready portraits. Lighting was bold and punchy: a mix of key strobe with a large softbox for flattering skin, rim light for muscle separation, and a small hard modifier to add specular highlights on hair and teeth.

Our lighting choices were intentional:

  1. Main light: large softbox for creamy skin tones and clean shadows.

  2. Rim/backlight: punchy strobe to cut the subject from backgrounds and emphasize muscle definition.

  3. Hair/edge: small hard light for glossy highlights on smile and hair.

We always lean into editorial fashion lighting, because the same images that work on stage should read like magazine editorial on a sponsor’s site.

Posing & Direction: From Competitor to Cover Model

Direction was practical and precise. Dr. Alexaundrea warmed up with dynamic movements, band pull-aparts, light cardio, and mobility flows, so her poses felt natural and her muscle tone popped. On set, we used short, actionable cues:

  • “Squeeze and exhale” to engage abs without jaw-clenching.

  • “Drop the shoulder, lift the chin” for long neck lines.

  • “Shift weight to that back foot” for a stronger hip line in bikini poses.

For fashion frames, we dialed in subtle head turns and eye work to sell confidence. For fitness details, we guided micro-angles to show separation between muscle groups. Being a dentist gave her a smile advantage; we coached micro-smiles that read powerful, not staged.

BTS: Real Set Flow

Behind the scenes, Tessa handled styling and quick touch-ups while Dennis managed light and lens changes. We rotated lenses fast, 24–70 for sweeping editorial shapes, 70–200 for compressed portraits and close-ups of muscle. Hair and make-up adjustments happened between sets; hydration and short breaks kept energy high.

We shot sequences: movement, static pose, detail, and a candid laugh, then repeated with a light tilt or a lens swap. That repeat-and-refine method gives clients a variety of usable content for competition portfolios, Instagram reels, and sponsor decks.

Key Moments & Highlights

  1. The winning smile: a bright, genuine expression that balanced athlete intensity and professional warmth.

  2. Stage-ready muscle detail: rim-lit frames that read like WBFF material.

  3. Dual-brand images: shots that work as professional portraits for her dental practice and as striking fitness ads for sponsors.

We also created portrait-style headshots that could double as author images for speaking gigs or press, useful for anyone building a cross-industry brand.
